Vilnius CGEvent - the way I saw it

It is so cool, when a good idea is constantly moving forward! This weekend the very first CG Event took place in Vilnius, having gathered a lot of interesting and talented people, guys from Ukraine even brought a fully packed CG-Bus ! A new European format did only good to the conference - hooray, more speakers and more topics!  Vilnius CG Event was certainly as informative as the one held in Moscow. I can admit, that sometimes I was torn between the halls just to listen to the next speaker.

Where we were and what we saw

Sergey Tsyptsyn started with statistics as usual! And it turned out that the majority of people were from Vilnius and Minsk and one of the most frequently used 3D software is 3ds max.

However, as Sergey predicts, very soon people and software will share the influence equally =)

Oleg Pridiyk from Lithuanian company Game Insight told us how it was to create a 3D free-to-play MMO mobile game in 2 years. He shared the problems, he had faced while working: how it was difficult to work with a Unity upgrade from 3 to 5, and how complicated it appeared to be to base on a particular device - software developers are always one step ahead, you hardly can catch up with them! Besides, Oleg shared that ladies (characters) were not so easy to deal with in games, however, I suppose, it is already a common knowledge!)

By the way, 12 teams are currently working on the project and Oleg tries to encourage everyone by his experience: “We managed to do it, so you can do it too!”

Guys from Unity showed the making of a short film “The Blacksmith” rendered in real time. To learn more visit Unity site: http://unity3d.com/ru/pages/the-blacksmith

* By the way, there's a need for experienced graphics programmers, test-engineers and technical artists )

Wargaming team was fast but quite informative, having presented free camera in Wot. Direct shooting while playing is a great solution in creating game videos. Good job!

About secrets

Ignacio Vargas made a "top-secret" presentation of a new tool Caronte FX. Following such tools as Realflow, Maxwell render and Xflow, Next Limit Technologies have developed a cute thing Caronte, which can rig objects, and as I understood, some characters with the help of simple physical simulation, besides everything is calculated in real time, that helps an artist, as Ignacio states it,  stop struggling with the tool. Indeed, it seems to me, that it's a useful tool — let's see how it will work in the end of 2015 for Unity, and in 2016 for Unreal Engine. By the way, the animation may be possible to export to Maya, as for other software packages it's still unclear — the tool is under development at the moment.

Surely I couldn't miss the presentation made by a representative of Maxon Glenn Frey, who, by the way, has the same name as the member of the Eagles. Glenn shared a secret that he used to be a member of a boy band. He is said to sing quite well, however Glenn denies that and doesn't advice to even have a look at his music career.
However it seems to me, that Glenn is a bit cunning and crowds of girls used to follow him at that time.

Glenn told how easy is Cinema 4D to use due to a fast user interface. Using his works as an example, he showed that a lot can be done with the help of this tool - from simple modelling and sculpting to animation. Moreover we learnt how to rig and animate a character in 10 minutes. You think that's impossible  - then you should have gone to CGEvent where you would have been reassured) With the help of “fish” auto rig we animated a shark and using cmotion tool made quite credible spider running.

Remembered Glenn's advice: a character should always have a recognisable silhouette!

The most impressive and tasty

An art-director Virginie Bourdin blew everybody out of the water by incredible breathtaking concepts to such projects as "Golden compass", "Pirates of the Caribbean 4", "X-men: the days of the future past", "Harry Potter and Deathly hallows. Part2" and a lot of others. Those who didn't attend CGEvent, lost a unique opportunity to see it all  - everything was sooo secret that we even were not allowed to take photos. What was also interesting to learn

A special HR service STAYA has been recently launched in Moscow. Here you can offer or find vacancies for CG specialists. Konstantin Kharitonov, the founder of the service, shared the news that employers had been already collaborating with STAYA, however, to send a CV one should wait no less that 3 months as far as the project is under testing at the moment. I'm sure, everything will be great  - get ready with your CV!

Those who have been struggling with the keyboard searching for 3D models in the net should be happy to learn about a special search service 3dmdb.com that has been operating for 2 weeks already. Alexey Korostylev, presenting the project at the event reassured, that we could find almost everything.

People

As usual, great thanks to Sergey Tsyptsyn for holding this annual forum for experience and ideas exchange. Thanks twice for the fact, that CG Event became one European unit bigger, and now we can meet more professionals and listen to their advice. Surely, nothing could have been done without a well-coordinated Lithuanian team headed by Vitalijus Zukas, CEO of OKTA studio. Due to him we had such an amazing after party with a lot of fun, CG burgers and beer ;)

Vitalijus, special thanks for invitation and a warm welcome at OKTA =)

P.S. Unfortunately, I couldn't get to all the presentations. Everything written here is based on my own experience, if something was missed or mentioned wrong - sorry in advance.
