How and why we show off on camera

Indeed, you've got it right. The more you show off at an animation studio, the better. In front of the mirror, on a smartphone or a camera, in front of any reflecting surface...
More drama and spirit!

Generally this is what gentlemen animators do.  They thoroughly study the result of their grimacing and then transfer the liked moments into the animation of a character. Back in the day, when video shooting was not as widespread and trivial as it is now, at big animation studios, Disney for example, each animator had a mirror for such purpose, so as they could enjoy studying of their facial expressions to the full.

In more complicated cases they had to shoot the play on camera anyway.

The task has become easier now. Equipped with an ordinary smartphone, an animator can frantically shoot everywhere and everything at any time, in general, himself beloved. A little bit later, he can "stick" to his videos for hours and watch this or that episode for hundred times. Sure, these are not the signs of neglected narcissism. It's just a video reference.

A good animator should make character's play the most credible and accurate as possible, so that the viewer could easily grasp the idea of its nature and believe that the character is real. This is why before moving a puppet in the editor program, an animator should play his character himself or he should find and take a video of somebody, who can deliver the nature of the character.

This is how they did many years ago and still do.

From time to time we also have such "state of madness" at our studio. Many of you have already seen our Christmas card with a singing Christmas tree and now we are ready to show what was behind the scenes.
